Online Panel Discussion: Language, Law and Corona

On 3 December 2020, the Austrian Society for Legal Linguistics (ÖGRL) is organizing an online panel discussion on the relationship between language, law and the "new normality" in times of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Which forms of official action can be subsumed under terms such as "adequate" or "special protective measures" (§ 2a Abs 1 COVID-19-Maßnahmengesetz)? Is there a differentiated principle of legality in the crisis? How much room for interpretation can the constitutional state tolerate, and why does the Constitutional Court (VfGH) repeal (un)certain laws? How can methods of legal linguistics contribute to solving interpretation problems in state emergency (and beyond)?

Panelists are:

  • Mag. Thomas Kronschläger, Institute for German Studies Technical University of Braunschweig
  • Dr. Paul Schwarzenbacher, ÖGRL
  • Prof. Dr. Christian Piska, Institute for Law, University of Vienna
  • Mag. Daniel Leisser, B.A., LL.M., Center for Teacher Education, University of Vienna

Moderation: Mag. Vanessa Krebs (ÖGRL)
