A package of laws against hate on the net recently passed the Austrian National Council and will largely – with a few special provisions – enter into force on 1 January 2021. In the course of the review process, more than 200 comments were received, including one from Facebook. The original draft legislation was amended slightly. All in all, significant changes were made that will provide additional assistance for victims and make large platform operators more accountable.
We dedicatied our last rooftop.talk in our media law series to the topic of “Hate on the Net” and highlighted this extensive new legislative package together with Federal Minister Karoline Edtstadler. This time, the live broadcast took place directly from the Austrian Federal Chancellery.
- Mag. Karoline Edtstadler, Federal Minister for the EU and the Constitution
